SANT JAUME DELS DOMENYS, Tarragona — Catalan police detained a man armed with a large machete on Friday afternoon following a tense confrontation in the plaza adjacent to the church of Sant Jaume dels Domenys, a small municipality in the province of Tarragona, according to official statements from the Mossos d’Esquadra.
Attempted Tourist Robbery In Barcelona Ends In Fatal Stabbing
The incident occurred around 2:00 p.m. when the individual, described by authorities as having approximately fifty prior police records, reportedly became agitated after being unable to purchase tobacco at a local establishment that was preparing to close. Witnesses told police that the man began shouting and brandishing the large bladed weapon in a public space, prompting concerned residents to contact emergency services.
“Several neighbors saw him acting aggressively and immediately called us,” said a spokesperson for the Mossos d’Esquadra. “Our priority was to ensure public safety while de-escalating the situation.”
Officers from the local police unit responded rapidly to the scene and established a perimeter around the plaza. Given the potential risk posed by an armed and visibly agitated individual in a populated area, tactical protocols were activated. After attempts to communicate with the man and encourage him to surrender the weapon proved unsuccessful, officers deployed a Taser—a non-lethal electronic restraint device—to safely subdue him without causing serious injury.
Once immobilized, the suspect was placed in handcuffs and transferred to police facilities for processing. No injuries were reported among officers, residents, or the detained individual during the operation. The machete was secured as evidence and will be analyzed as part of the ongoing investigation.
Under Spanish criminal law, brandishing a weapon in a public place in a manner that threatens public safety can constitute offenses including public disorder, coercion, or illegal possession of weapons. Given the suspect’s extensive prior record, prosecutors may consider aggravating factors when determining appropriate charges. The detained man is presumed innocent until proven guilty, and his legal representatives will have the opportunity to present a defense during judicial proceedings.
Sant Jaume dels Domenys, a municipality of approximately 3,000 residents in the Baix Penedès region, is generally considered a quiet, rural community. Incidents of this nature are uncommon, and the confrontation prompted a visible police presence throughout the afternoon as investigators gathered statements and secured the area.
“We understand that events like this can be unsettling for residents,” said a local municipal representative who requested anonymity. “We are grateful to the Mossos d’Esquadra for their swift and professional response, and we reaffirm our commitment to working with law enforcement to maintain the safety and tranquility of our community.”
The use of Tasers by Catalan police has been the subject of ongoing discussion regarding training, proportionality, and accountability. Officers receive specialized instruction on when and how to deploy the device, with guidelines emphasizing its use as a less-lethal alternative when facing armed or violently resistant individuals. In this case, authorities indicated that the Taser deployment was consistent with established protocols for managing high-risk confrontations while minimizing harm.
For residents who witnessed the incident, the afternoon’s events were alarming but ultimately reassuring due to the rapid police response. “We saw him shouting and holding that large knife, and it was frightening,” said one neighbor who asked not to be identified. “But the police arrived quickly and handled it calmly. That’s what matters.”
Local businesses in the plaza resumed normal operations shortly after the scene was cleared, though some patrons expressed renewed awareness of public safety considerations. Community leaders have emphasized the importance of reporting suspicious behavior promptly while avoiding escalation or confrontation.
As the investigation proceeds, judicial authorities will review the circumstances of the detention, the evidence collected, and any additional factors that may influence charging decisions. The detained individual remains in police custody pending formal presentation before a judge, who will determine whether pretrial detention or alternative measures are warranted.
Further updates are expected as the case advances through Spain’s legal system and as additional information becomes available from official sources.
