LA CANONJA, Tarragona — A teenage boy required emergency eye surgery after being violently assaulted by a group of five youths who robbed him of his mobile phone in a public park in La Canonja, a municipality in the Tarragonès region, according to local media reports and police sources.

The incident occurred on the afternoon of April 29 at Campsrodons Park, located on Avinguda de la Pineda. According to preliminary accounts gathered by local outlet El Caso, the minor was attacked without warning by several individuals who brutally beat him before seizing his phone and fleeing the scene. The violence of the assault caused significant trauma to one of the victim’s eyes, necessitating urgent surgical intervention to prevent permanent vision loss.
When officers from the La Canonja Municipal Guard arrived at the park following emergency calls, the suspects had already dispersed and could not be immediately located. Medical personnel from the Emergency Medical System (SEM) attended to the victim at the scene before transporting him to a nearby hospital, where ophthalmological specialists performed the emergency procedure.
“The injuries were serious enough to require immediate surgical attention,” said a source familiar with the medical response. “The priority was preserving the young man’s vision, and thankfully the intervention was successful.”
Following the attack, the victim’s family filed a formal complaint with the Mossos d’Esquadra, the Catalan police force, which has opened an investigation into the incident. Authorities are pursuing the case as a suspected robbery with violence and intimidation, a criminal offense under Spanish law that carries enhanced penalties when committed against minors or with particular brutality.
As of this reporting, no arrests have been made in connection with the assault. Investigators are reviewing security footage from the area, interviewing witnesses, and analyzing forensic evidence collected at the scene. Police have appealed to anyone who may have witnessed the attack or who possesses relevant information to come forward and assist the inquiry.
“We are treating this incident with the utmost seriousness,” said a spokesperson for the Mossos d’Esquadra. “Attacks against young people in public spaces are unacceptable, and we are committed to identifying those responsible and ensuring they face appropriate consequences under the law.”
La Canonja, a municipality of approximately 4,000 residents adjacent to the city of Tarragona, is generally considered a quiet residential community. The violent nature of this robbery has prompted renewed attention to public safety in local parks and recreational areas, particularly during afternoon and evening hours when young people often gather.
“We love our neighborhood, and we want our children to feel safe playing outside,” said one resident who requested anonymity. “This incident is frightening, but we trust that the police will do everything they can to find those responsible.”

The case in La Canonja occurred just days before another violent episode in the nearby Bonavista neighborhood of Tarragona, underscoring growing concerns about street crime in the region. During celebrations surrounding the April Fair at the Parc del Fòrum, an attempted robbery triggered a large-scale brawl that ultimately left one individual seriously injured by a bladed weapon.
According to investigators, that incident began when an individual allegedly attempted to steal personal belongings from another person inside the fairgrounds. Officers from the Tarragona Urban Guard initially intervened to identify those involved and remove them from the event. However, tensions escalated shortly thereafter, and a second confrontation erupted in the adjacent parking area.
During that altercation, the alleged thief sustained serious stab wounds and required hospitalization. Two young men, aged 27 and 18, both Spanish nationals of foreign origin, were subsequently detained on suspicion of participating in the stabbing assault. They remain in custody pending judicial proceedings.
The clustering of violent incidents in the Tarragona area has prompted discussion among local officials, law enforcement, and community leaders about strategies to enhance public safety and prevent escalation. While authorities emphasize that such episodes remain relatively uncommon, they acknowledge the importance of proactive measures to address emerging patterns of youth-related violence.
“Tarragona and its surrounding municipalities continue to be safe places for residents and visitors alike,” said a spokesperson for the Tarragona city council. “However, we recognize that isolated incidents can have a significant impact on community confidence. We are working closely with police, social services, and neighborhood associations to reinforce preventive efforts and ensure rapid response when incidents occur.”
Under Spanish law, robbery with violence and intimidation is considered a serious offense, particularly when the victim is a minor or when the assault results in significant injury. Prosecutors will evaluate factors such as the degree of force used, the vulnerability of the victim, and any prior criminal history when determining appropriate charges.
For the family of the minor injured in La Canonja, the aftermath of the attack involves not only physical recovery but also emotional support. Victim assistance services in Catalonia offer counseling, legal guidance, and practical help to individuals affected by violent crime. Local organizations have reached out to provide resources and ensure that the young man has access to the care he needs.
As investigations into both the La Canonja robbery and the Bonavista brawl continue, authorities have reiterated their commitment to public safety and accountability. “Every resident deserves to feel secure in their community,” noted a regional public safety official. “We will continue to dedicate the necessary resources to preventing violence, supporting victims, and ensuring that those who commit crimes face justice.”
Further updates are expected as judicial authorities provide additional guidance and as investigators make progress in identifying and apprehending those responsible for the assault in Campsrodons Park.
