MADRID, Spain – The National Police arrested a Ceuta resident yesterday accused of causing damage to a vehicle in which Ceuta MP Julia Ferreras, Gaza Flotilla activist Rafael Borrego and human rights lawyer Sofía Cánovas were travelling. The incident occurred at around 8.15pm at the vehicle exit of the Port of Ceuta, where dozens of residents had gathered to condemn the arrival of the Pamplona-based group Negu Gorriak/Derecho a Techo, which they accused of being radical and of coming to break coexistence.
Hundreds Of Ceuta Residents March In Defence Of The City’s Spanish Identity
Several of the participants in the gathering stopped a car whose occupants they did not know, because, according to some of those involved, the front-seat passenger, Rafael Borrego, began filming them and reproaching them for what they were doing. The demonstrators threw eggs at the car and shook it, forcing the immediate intervention of the National Police. There were also clashes between the protest participants and officers, and when riot police reinforcements arrived they had to fire shots into the air.
The detainee is accused of damage to a vehicle as well as assaulting agents of authority. The identity of those in the car became known after the violent episode, with the demonstrators having targeted them after mistaking them for members of the Navarrese group. The secretary general of the Ceuta Ya! party, Mohamed Mustafa, reported who the people travelling in the car were, and stated that Ferreras has already filed a complaint at a police station.
