CEUTA, Spain – The spark that has pushed Ceuta to the brink of social explosion was ignited on Friday, literally, as a group of residents set fire to a migrant camp on Benítez beach, nearly one month after the mass entry of more than 80,000 people into the autonomous city. A cordon of riot police now separates two stark realities: in front of the officers, hundreds of increasingly frustrated Ceuta residents clamour for the immediate expulsion of the invaders, while behind the agents, hundreds of defiant migrants show their intention to resist and refuse to return to their country. Smoke, like that of a pressure cooker about to explode, envelops the beach, rising from the shacks of the camp that a group of residents set ablaze after tearing it down.
Ceuta Residents: ‘Get Them Off The Streets, We Can’t Live Like This’
Neither side is willing to back down. The protesters eventually leave, police redeploy, and the migrants, mostly of Maghrebi origin, return to rebuild the settlement. The scene at Benítez beach has become a powerful symbol of the deepening crisis in Ceuta, where tensions have been escalating since the mass border crossing on July 30. Residents, exhausted by weeks of insecurity, crime, and the presence of thousands of irregular migrants on the streets, have grown increasingly frustrated with what they perceive as a lack of effective action by authorities.
Police have been caught in the middle, struggling to maintain order while protecting both the protesting residents and the vulnerable migrants who remain in makeshift camps along the coast. The government has yet to announce new measures to address the situation, and calls for a more decisive response have grown louder from both residents and security personnel on the ground. The burning of the camp marks a dangerous escalation in the crisis, raising fears that further violence could erupt if authorities fail to find a way to resolve the deadlock. The coming days will be critical in determining whether the situation in Ceuta can be brought under control or whether it will continue to spiral towards an even more volatile and unpredictable outcome.
