FIGUERES, Girona — Catalan police have detained a 48-year-old man on charges of fatally stabbing his former partner in a public square in Figueres, in an incident authorities are investigating as a suspected case of gender-based violence.
Woman Killed in Stabbing Attack in Esplugues de Llobregat, Barcelona
The homicide occurred around 3:30 p.m. on Tuesday in Plaza Josep Tarradellas, a central location in the Girona province municipality. According to official reports, the suspect attacked the 33-year-old transgender woman, of South American origin, with a bladed weapon. Emergency services, including medical teams from the Catalan Emergency Medical System (SEM), responded to the scene but were unable to save the victim’s life despite immediate intervention.
Following the attack, footage circulating on social media platforms showed the suspect crossing the plaza and washing his blood-stained arms at a nearby public fountain. The fountain has since been secured by investigators and marked as part of the forensic evidence collection at the crime scene. Additional video material captured the moments after the stabbing, showing bystanders surrounding the suspect and preventing his departure from the area until police arrived.
Authorities confirmed that the detained individual had an active restraining order prohibiting contact with the victim. According to statements from the High Court of Justice of Catalonia (TSJC), the suspect had been arrested on Monday for allegedly violating that order and for suspected injuries inflicted against the woman. Following that detention, a summary trial was held at the specialized court handling gender-based violence cases, where the suspect accepted a six-month prison sentence for abuse, along with a restraining order requiring him to remain at least 250 meters from the victim and to maintain no communication with her for a period of one year and four months.
After the conclusion of that proceeding, the suspect was taken into custody while the victim was scheduled to appear before the on-duty judge and undergo a forensic examination. When the victim did not attend the scheduled appointment, the magistrate ordered the suspect’s release. Less than 24 hours later, the fatal attack occurred, and the suspect was arrested again at the scene by officers from the Mossos d’Esquadra and the Figueres Municipal Guard.
The case is being investigated as a suspected gender-based homicide under Spanish legal frameworks designed to address violence against women. These protocols mandate specialized investigative procedures, victim protection measures, and coordination between judicial, police, and social services.

Under Spanish law, violations of restraining orders and acts of gender-based violence carry enhanced penalties reflecting the serious nature of these offenses. Prosecutors will evaluate all available evidence, including forensic reports, digital records, witness testimony, and prior judicial documentation, to determine appropriate charges and procedural next steps.
The incident has prompted renewed attention to the challenges of protecting victims of domestic violence, particularly in cases where restraining orders and judicial measures are already in place. Authorities have emphasized that all reports of threats, harassment, or violence should be reported immediately to enable rapid intervention.
For families and communities affected by gender-based violence, support services remain available through regional health, social, and judicial institutions. These resources include crisis counseling, legal guidance, and emergency protection measures designed to assist those at risk.
The Civil Guard and Mossos d’Esquadra maintain specialized units trained in responding to gender-based violence cases, with protocols for risk assessment, victim accompaniment, and coordination with judicial authorities. Public awareness campaigns continue to encourage reporting of suspicious behavior or signs of abuse.
As the investigation continues, judicial authorities have committed to providing updates through official channels in accordance with applicable legal protocols and privacy protections. Further details regarding forensic findings, judicial proceedings, and any additional measures related to victim protection are expected as the case advances through the Spanish legal system.
