MADRID, Spain – Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez arrived in Oliva on Tuesday to visit one of the towns worst hit by Storm DANA Adam, where on his arrival at the Advanced Command Post he was received by the authorities and by citizens who had gathered at the site, some of whom booed and insulted him while others applauded the head of the executive. Meanwhile, the president of the Generalitat, Juanfran Pérez Llorca, announced the approval on Tuesday of a package of aid for the municipalities affected by the storm and said he would request that the Spanish government declare the area a disaster zone.
Extreme Flooding Hits Valencia and Alicante
Separately, workers from a company in Oliva found early on Tuesday morning the body of a farmer in the Pego-Oliva marshland, one of the areas worst damaged by the flooding from Storm DANA Adam, and authorities are investigating whether the death is related to that episode of torrential rain. If confirmed, it would be the fourth death from this episode of extreme rainfall in the Valencian Community and the sixth in the whole country, although according to the Civil Guard the farmer is believed to have gone to his plot and suffered a health problem that caused his death.
The State Meteorological Agency maintained a yellow alert on Tuesday for Girona due to coastal phenomena and for the islands of Menorca, La Palma and El Hierro due to rain. The city of Alicante and surrounding municipalities recorded very localised and high-intensity storms during the night from Monday to Tuesday, and 13 people had to be rescued safe and sound from a tunnel on the AP-7.
