WASHINGTON, United States – US President Donald Trump on Sunday accused the Spanish government of having “zero control” over its border with Morocco and described the migration situation in Ceuta as “sad,” following the mass arrival of migrants from Moroccan territory. The American president took to his social media platform to voice his criticism, writing that it is very sad what is happening in Spain, a country that has no control over its border.

This is not the first time in recent days that Trump has targeted the migration management of Pedro Sánchez’s executive. On Thursday, he went as far as to label Spain a “ruined country,” while also questioning the conduct of Spanish authorities in the face of the migration crisis. In the early days of the mass arrival, Trump attributed the episode to weak laws and poor management by the Spanish government, asserting at the time that Spanish authorities did not know what to do in response to the massive influx of people from Morocco.
Trump also made reference to the interpretation of a Spanish Supreme Court ruling issued in July, which held that migrants who reached Spanish territory by swimming could not be automatically returned. This issue has been identified precisely by the Spanish government as one of the falsehoods that contributed to encouraging the mass crossing of migrants towards Ceuta.
