MADRID, Spain – The Spanish government has agreed to impose border controls on travelers arriving from Italy, citing the persistent pressure of irregular migration affecting the transalpine country. The measure will take effect at internal borders in ports and airports after the Italian government refused to lift similar restrictions on travelers from Spain, which were imposed following the mass migrant influx into Ceuta from Morocco.
Italy Suspends Schengen Agreement with Spain
According to government sources, the border controls will be operational from midnight on Saturday and will involve identity, passport, and nationality checks on travelers. For nationals of third countries, visa or residence permit verification will be required.
The measures will be carried out on a random basis and will remain in force until midnight on September 7, unless there is a change in circumstances that would warrant an adjustment to the timeframe.
Italy decided to suspend the Schengen zone with Spain on August 1 in response to the migration crisis in Ceuta, which occurred more than a week ago. The Spanish government had requested on Friday that Italian authorities lift the measures before the end of the weekend, warning that otherwise it would adopt “proportionate” measures to protect the interests and dignity of Spanish citizens.
However, the Italian government responded that it “does not accept ultimatums or impositions” and that it would not reconsider its decision to suspend Spain from the Schengen Agreement until August 15, citing social media calls for a new mass migrant crossing on that date from Morocco. In response, the Spanish government has now decided to act in kind and impose controls on travelers from Italy.

The reciprocal measures mark a significant escalation in tensions between the two European nations, as both grapple with the complex challenge of managing irregular migration and securing their borders within the framework of the Schengen free movement area. The situation reflects broader European concerns over migration management and the strain placed on border regions, with member states increasingly resorting to unilateral measures to protect their national interests. The coming days will determine whether diplomatic channels can resolve the dispute or whether the reciprocal border controls will persist beyond the initially set timeframe.
